Peter Lindbergh: Azzedine Alaïa - BAGS

Peter Lindbergh and Azzedine Alaïa, the photographer and the couturier, were united by their shared love of the color black, which they interpreted in their own personal way - in legendary photographs and breathtaking dresses. Lindbergh favored black and white because it helped him in his search for authenticity in the faces he photographed. Alaïa referenced the monochrome of classic dresses and created true body sculptures.

This book documents the unique dialogue between two artists who were close in an extraordinary kinship and partnership, and is at the same time a testimony to their style-forming contributions to the history of photography and fashion.

Despite their geographically different origins, Lindbergh and Alaïa pursued similar goals. While Lindbergh became increasingly famous in Germany thanks to his work for Stern and moved into a studio in Paris in 1978, Alaïa was a very discreet couturier whose subtle creations were among the best-kept secrets of prominent haute couture customers. In the erotic interplay of covering and revealing, he modeled the female body like a sculptor, while Lindbergh made it shine by capturing the models' soul and personality. Both rejected artifice that distracted from the real issue, and it was only a matter of time before they came together for a series of collaborative projects.
